What is Psychological Counselling?

Counselling is a process of facilitation where a client works with a counselling psychologist, through ‘talk therapy’ and counselling skills. The aim of the counselling relationship is to help declutter & unravel the client’s path in order for the client to see and understand various perspectives to identify and build up his own coping mechanisms. People who are otherwise distressed in their daily lives can benefit a lot from counselling. Exploration, facilitation, confrontation & empowerment are the key factors in counselling process where effective interpersonal skills and empirical interventions are used by a professional counselling psychologist. Empathetic stance and rightful listening build the foundation to positive working relationships between client & the counselling psychologist. Counselling is effective when clients feel safe, understood, and accepted without judgement. As all of us are different, the support offered varies depending on one’s situation and the techniques involved are customised.

Purpose of Counselling

  • To assist clients in becoming aware of their emotional state, so they can know when they are experiencing stress and other disabling mental blocks.
  • To assist clients in learning to express their emotions safely (to themselves and to others), so that they can become aware of and protect their personal boundaries.
  • To work with clients in separating the past from the present on an emotional level, so that they can experience their emotional  response based on their present needs, rather than on past trauma being re-triggered and replayed.
  • To teach clients to address their present in an accepting way so that they learn to not repress their needs to protect an  attachment,  whether human or material.

Benefits of Counselling

  • To give you a safe space to talk to a trained professional without judgement.
  • To help you make sense of difficult feelings/emotions and understand yourself.
  • To help you resolve complicacies, or find ways to manage them.
  • To help you recognise unhelpful patterns and/or behaviours, and find ways to change/alter them (if you want to).
  • While it was previously seen as an option for those who have reached crisis point, now it is recognised as a preventative measure, a form of self-care in managing difficult feelings before they get worse.
